SGX (Jan - Jun 2025) Spring Internship Programme

Risk Internship Programme

1) Enterprise Risk

Brief Overview:
The Enterprise Risk Management team is a second line of defense function within SGX and supports senior management and the units within the organization to manage the organization’s risks and to maintain business continuity. 

 

Learning Objectives:

The intern will be able to undertake risk management activities in a financial institution such as:

  • Execution of risk and control programs within the organization
  • Risk analysis, management, and reporting
  • Business impact analysis

 

Job Description:

  • Work closely with external and internal stakeholders (e.g. internal audit, consultants) to facilitate review of the Enterprise Risk program
  • Assist with execution of Enterprise Risk Management programs (e.g. risk and control-self assessments, business impact analysis)
  • Participate in the planning and execution of risk engagement activities to drive risk culture in the Group
  • Conduct analysis of process and controls to identify gaps/areas for improvement and assist with process redesign
  • Conduct research and analysis for risk-related matters (e.g. identification and assessment of emerging risks)
  • Prepare reports to Senior Management and Board/Board Committees

 

Knowledge and Skills requirements:

  • Capable of prioritising and multi-tasking in a dynamic environment
  • Able to work independently as well as collaborate with various stakeholders
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite (including Excel, Powerpoint, Word)

2) Risk, Model and Quant

Brief Overview:
The Risk Analytics and Quants team in Risk Management is in charge of the development of risk models and deployment of innovative digital solutions to support critical risk monitoring activities and manage the exposure from market participants.  Key working areas including setting margin methodologies, stress test, collateral framework, etc.

 

Learning Objectives:

The intern will have an opportunity to work with the Risk Analytics and Quants team. He/she will be exposed to projects that enhances in-house developed risk tools, and digitalise BAU processes spanning different risk dimensions and across the markets. The level of involvement will be tailored to be suitable to the intern’s rate of learning.

You will get a well-rounded insight to how it is like to work in a dynamic team where many theoretical and advanced concepts are applied to reality.  The intern will also learn how to develop quantitative risk methodologies and data infrastructure using predominantly Python and SQL.  He/she will also learn the latest regulatory development on clearing and settlement.
 

 

Job Description:

As an intern in the Risk Management Unit, you will assist in:

  • Quantitative and research studies for new risk models/process
  • Development/enhancement of risk tools to enable proactive risk monitoring
  • System testing for launch of new processes and products

 

Knowledge and Skills requirements:

To meet these objectives, you should:

  • Be open and willing to ask questions (must)
  • Be proficient in Python and SQL programming (must)
  • Have strong quantitative skills and be comfortable working with algorithms and big data (must)
  • Be hands-on, and be willing to work with data, systems and process information for analysis and modelling
  • Have good analytical and communication skills
  • Have good understanding of both market risk and credit risk

Risk Control & Policy

Brief Overview:
The Risk Control and Policy team is responsible for monitoring and managing the risks of expected and unexpected events that may have an adverse impact on the company. This includes monitoring of market participants’ risk exposures, stress testing evaluations on potential losses, margining, etc. 

 

Learning Objectives:

The selected intern would aid the team in cross-unit projects (e.g. daily margining, risk threshold review implementation, default management, client profiling, regulatory reporting enhancement, wrong way risk monitoring). The intern would be able to acquire a deeper understanding of the financial markets and products across multi asset classes, and clearing risk management. 

 

Job Description:

Data Aggregation and Analysis: 

  • Learn to dissect big data, including data cleaning and analysis techniques, to extract meaningful insights. 
  • Utilize basic programming skills in Python to aggregate data and generate reports.

 
Testing and Quality Assurance: 

  • Conduct thorough testing on report submissions from external stakeholders to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
  • Assist in identifying and addressing any discrepancies or issues in data submissions.

 
Process Improvement: 

  • Contribute ideas and insights to improve risk monitoring activities and streamline processes.
  • Collaborate with team members to implement process enhancements and efficiency measures.

 
Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Educate and inform external stakeholders about reporting requirements, ensuring clarity and understanding. 
  • Follow up promptly and effectively on stakeholder queries, providing clear and concise responses.


Knowledge and Skills requirements:

  • Strong programming skills in Python for data aggregation and analysis. [must]
  • Strong Excel skills for data manipulation and reporting purposes. [must]
  • High curiosity, keen interest and good knowledge of financial markets, preferably in derivatives.
  • Excellent attention to detail and critical thinking, with the ability to analyze patterns and trends in complex problems and develop innovative solutions. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
