Freight Markets Intern

Short overview on the Unit/Team

The Baltic Exchange Asia team has broad functions similar to the London HQ. The Singapore office is the regional headquarters for the organisation and produces freight indices, has a sales and marketing team including an events function, and an escrow service which is unique to this location.

 

Learning Outcomes

The selected intern will get hands-on experience of the different functions of the Baltic Exchange and learn about membership services, methodologies behind global benchmark freight production and sales and marketing strategies.

The intern will be involved in the daily functions of each of the teams – freight production, membership, escrow and sales. He/she will also acquire insights into the fundamentals of freight markets through helping with market research. Additionally, the intern will be expected to assist with projects such as sales campaigns and marketing events.

Depending on the candidate’s preference, he/she will have a chance to work with quantitative analytics, writing white papers, meeting clients or co-organising members’ events.

 

Job Description

  • Build and maintain various excels and dashboards to monitor freight rates, trading volumes and exchange data
  • Support, enhance and develop analytics on freight data, benchmark data and internal metrics
  • Research into the regional shipping industry and assist with marketing and sales strategies and campaigns
  • Collect and analyse trade data for research reports, news articles and white papers
  • Assist with the content, layout and design of marketing materials (presentations, brochures, videos) to drive trading activity
  • Organise industry events – this includes workshops, roundtables, seminars and forums

 

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and proficiency in Chinese to liaise with Chinese clients
  • MUST be proficient in MS Office i.e. excel and powerpoint including VBA/Macros
  • Good to have any shipping / maritime knowledge
  • Good to know at least one programming language (for example C, C++, Java, C#, Python, Groovy, Perl), SQL
  • Good to have an interest in marketing, client outreach, digital/social media knowledge
  • Good interpersonal & communication skills and the willingness and ability to work in a team
  • Be able to multitask, be process driven and the ability to think innovatively and independently and enjoy working under pressure and tight timelines
